Practice: Gurdeep Dhaliwal is a California Teachers Association Group Legal Services Attorney and practices labor and employment law on behalf of unions and employees.
Education: In 2003, Gurdeep Dhaliwal received a bachelor of arts from the University of California, Berkeley with a major in Rhetoric with a minor in Mathematics.
In 2006, Gurdeep Dhaliwal obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis, Martin Luther King, Jr., School of Law. Gurdeep also graduated with a public interest law certificate recognizing her extensive contribution to public interest work during law school. Gurdeep was a participant in the Sacramento County Bar Association Summer Fellowship Program. During law school, she worked as an extern at Equal Rights Advocates, the Legal Aid Society – Employment Law Center, the Volunteer Legal Services Program – Employment Law clinic and the Napa County Public Defender’s office.
Prior Experience: Subsequent to graduating from law school, Gurdeep Dhaliwal worked as an AmeriCorps Attorney in the Employment Unit at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. She provided "Know Your Rights" community education workshops to community groups, organizations and schools in Los Angeles County, California. Ms. Dhaliwal ran the Self-help Legal Clinic at the California Department of Labor Standards Enforcement, which assisted workers by explaining the agency's process, filling out initial claim forms and calculating wages owed and penalties. Ms. Dhaliwal also represented low-income clients with wage claim and unemployment issues. Ms. Dhaliwal then moved to the housing unit at the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, where she represented low-income tenants in Superior Court and through the Section 8 administrative process. In the housing unit, Gurdeep defended against housing discrimination and protected other tenant rights. Ms. Dhaliwal gained extensive trial litigation experience including preparing Complaints, Answers and Writs; appearing for motions, administrative hearings and trials; and litigating appeals.
Legal Memberships: Ms. Dhaliwal is a member of the State Bar of California, the Sacramento County Bar Association, the Women Lawyers of Sacramento, the South Asian Bar Association of Sacramento, and the Asian/Pacific Bar Association of Sacramento. She is on the Board of the Sacramento Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, and she performs pro bono representation through nonprofit KIND (Kids in Need of Defense).
